Dr. Barry May served as the Marion College Athletic Director from 1970-1984. May is best known for the growth of Marion College’s athletic success in the Mid-Central College Conference during his time, claiming 16 Team Conference Championships and the school’s first Conference All-Sports trophy. Also serving as the college’s head cross country and track and field coach, May coached five individual conference champions. In track and field, May’s teams won conference championships in 1982 and 1983. In 1982, the Titans finished runner-up at the NCCAA National Championships. In cross country, May’s teams won the conference championship in 1973, 1981, and 1982, and produced Marion College’s first NAIA All-American. In addition to his duties as Athletic Director and coach, May served for many years as the NAIA District Chair. May left his post as Director of Athletics in 1984 to serve as Marion Colleges Dean of Student Development from 1984-1989.
