1980 Women's Field Hockey

The 1980 Marion College women’s field hockey team won the AIAW Indiana State Championship (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women). Marion defeated Earlham College 3-1 in the State championship match to advance to the AIAW Regional Tournament. It was the only State championship win for the Titans in the 23-year history of the program (1968-1990). Marion went 15-7 during the 1980 season that includes six matches vs. NCAA Division I programs and a 3-1 win at Notre Dame.

“Field hockey at Marion College was different from many of the intercollegiate sports. Coach Sue Bowman recruited athletes already on campus to come out and play field hockey. They didn’t have experience or even knowledge of the game of field hockey. On the rare occasion, she would get a player who had played the game before, but primarily she had to teach us the game. She put together competitive teams year after year. We worked hard and competed against Division I schools like Notre Dame, IU, Purdue, Ball State and Valparaiso every year.
