Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer was less than one minute away from their third win of the season on Saturday at Wildcat Field.
But Roosevelt (Ill.) scored the game-tying goal with just 52 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Roosevelt then ended the match with 5 minutes 16 seconds left in the first overtime period with a goal from the top of the 18-yard box for the 2-1 victory.
“Today was a very difficult loss as we dominated possession, the shot count and the run of play, but simply couldn't find the net,” said IWU head coach Tim Strader.
Indiana Wesleyan held a 23-6 advantage in shots and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Ten different Indiana Wesleyan players recorded at least one shot.
“We have considerable room for growth and maturing to do on the field, but with each match we get a little closer to being able to put together a total 90 minutes,” said Strader. “Our resolve and grit is being tested, but I am confident this group will respond next week as we get back to work on Monday.”
Indiana Wesleyan broke a scoreless tie in the 85th minute when Roosevelt committed a foul in the 18-yard box. Nicole Biggs (SR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) took the penalty kick and scored for the 1-0 advantage.
“As a team we are still trying to discover our identity on the field and quickly acclimate our new comers to our style of play,” stated Strader. “I believe we are very close to breaking through as a team, but must begin to do the little things that separate the average teams, from those playing well into December.”
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as they travel to play NCAA Division II Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan.
