Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer earned their best result of the season Saturday night at Wildcat Field as they tied 1-1 with No. 7-ranked Grace (Ind.).
“Incredible team effort tonight,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Tim Strader. “It started with our back line and it went forward. I thought Katie Pannabecker (SR/Leo, Ind.) was absolutely massive in the back and her organization with Susan Anthony (SR/Holland, Mich.) was just key in helping us achieve this result tonight.”
The Lancers entered play with a perfect 8-0-0 mark. They have already beaten the No. 2, No. 11, and No. 16 ranked teams this year in addition to two teams receiving votes in the national poll. The draw tonight ends the Lancer win streak at eight.
“That was pure heart,” continued Strader. “We dug in. They were relentless and truly wanted that result. To go up against a very quality side in Grace, who is nationally ranked on our field, we wanted to bring our best effort. And I absolutely believe this is a special group of young ladies. We showed our potential tonight.”
Indiana Wesleyan ignited the home crowd early with a goal just 75 seconds into the match. Lizzie Rittenhouse (JR/Marion, Ind.) launched a shot from 25 yards out that beat the Grace keeper as the ball hit the crossbar and in for the surprisingly early 1-0 lead.
“That was just pure energy,” stated Strader. “Her going out and getting that goal for us just lifted the spirit of the team and put us on the front foot. I felt like it made Grace chase the game a little bit.”
Grace would tie the score 10 minutes later. Mallary Roundeau put a shot on goal that Alex Seabeck (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) made the initial save on. But a short rebound was all that was needed for Jordan Hairgrove as she just beat Seabeck to the ball and put it to the back of the net for a 1-1 tie.
The Lancers outshot the Wildcats 17-8 on the evening and held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Wildcats were able to take the most shot attempts in the two overtime periods by a 3-2 margin. Seabeck earned nine saves in 110 minutes of action.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the Wildcats play at Bethel (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Indiana.
