Box Score SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- Following two road contests to open the 2015 season the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer team still has not been scored on in 180 minutes.
Indiana Wesleyan claimed a 3-0 shutout of host Lawrence Tech (Mich.) on Tuesday evening in Southfield, Michigan. IWU started the season with a 2-0 win at Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday. It is the first time Indiana Wesleyan has won their first two matches of the season since 2012.
"Today was a solid team victory,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Tim Strader. “We saw what we've been working on the training ground come out today. We take great pride in our team defending and earning two shutouts to start the season speaks to the team's commitment to being organized in our block and working for each other.”
Lizzie Rittenhouse (JR/Marion, Ind.) scored the first two goals of the match just three and a half minutes apart. Rittenhouse scored the game-winner in the 22nd minute and then gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute. The first goal was unassisted while Kaitlin Gishwiller assisted on the second goal. Rittenhouse has scored the game-winner in both victories this season.
Lydia Demmitt (SO/Troy, Ohio) accounted for the only score in the second half. She scored in the 69th minute with the assist to Nicole Biggs (SR/Fort Wayne, Ind.).
“While we are off to a good start we still have considerable room for improvement as we are not happy with our efforts in the first half,” stated Strader. “Our possession and speed of play was not up to our standard, but we are continuing to grow as a very young team with 13 newcomers. We are looking forward to getting back on the field tomorrow as we prepare for our next opponent.”
Both teams finished with 10 shots while the Wildcats held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Alex Seabeck (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) earned her second shutout of the season with six saves.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays on September 4-5 in the first two home matches of the season. IWU battles Georgetown (Ky.) at 4 p.m. on September 4 and then hosts Roosevelt (Ill.) at 2 p.m. on September 5.
