Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Five Wildcats scored on Saturday as Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer easily defeated visiting Lourdes (Mich.) 5-0 during Homecoming festivities in Marion.
The Wildcats outshot the Gray Wolves 18-8 in the match, including 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes. IWU put 11 shots on goal and nine different Wildcats recorded at least one shot.
“It was a tremendous team win today,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Tim Strader. “We had a great week of training this week and it translated on the field. We finally got our whole team healthy and you are starting to see the brand of soccer that we know we are capable of. To come out on Homecoming in front of our crowd and get a win on our field, the girls are elated.”
Katie Pannabecker (SR/Leo, Ind.) scored the opening goal in the 15th minute. A hand ball in the box set up a penalty kick for Indiana Wesleyan and Pannabecker took the kick and scored. Nearly 20 minutes later, Tia Sanford (FR/La Habra, Calif.) attacked the goal and headed it in as she made contact with the post for a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute.
Indiana Wesleyan did not waste any time in the second half as Annie McCarty (SR/Mason, Mich.) scored just 21 seconds in. The goal is the first in her career. Kaitlin Gishwiller and Megan Welch (FR/Dacula, Ga.) also scored in the second half as Indiana Wesleyan secured the 5-0 victory.
“To have five different players step up shows we are a balanced attack,” said Strader. “We have players that can step up and make a play and that is what we know we are capable of.”
Alexis Guillemette (FR/Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Alex Seabeck (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) combined for a shutout in goal. Guillemette played the first half and did not face a shot on goal while Seabeck stopped both shots that she faced.
Indiana Wesleyan evens their record to 5-5-1 this season while Lourdes falls to 4-4-1.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Crossroads League play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the Wildcats host the Indiana Wesleyan-Taylor Rivalry Game sponsored by Marion General Hospital.
