Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Kaitlin Gishwiller deflected a corner kick ball into the back of the net for a golden goal in the first overtime period as Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer beat No. 18 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) 2-1 at Wildcat Field on Senior Night.
Nicole Biggs (SR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) took the corner kick and her ball was headed by Susan Anthony (SR/Holland, Mich.). Gishwiller deflected the ball into the net to send the Wildcats into a wild celebration on the field.
“We went into overtime and I challenged them with let’s see your heart,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Tim Strader. “This group has put in so much work. This team deserves this win on Senior Night.”
The match was scoreless until the 70th minute when Tia Sanford (FR/La Habra, Calif.) scored for a 1-0 lead. Lizzie Rittenhouse (JR/Marion, Ind.) slotted a ball to Sanford who was able to beat the MVNU keeper for the lead. But five minutes later Mount Vernon Nazarene found the equalizer when Rachel Baker scored from point blank range for the 1-1 score.
Alex Seabeck (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) earned the win in net for Indiana Wesleyan as she played the second half and overtime periods. Seabeck made four saves while Alexis Guillemette (FR/Yorba Linda, Calif.) made two saves during the first half.
The win in the regular season finale give Indiana Wesleyan a record of 8-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the Crossroads League. Indiana Wesleyan tied for fifth place with Taylor (Ind.) in the league standings.
The Wildcats honored 11 seniors on Saturday as they played in their final regular season match at Wildcat Field. The senior class was honored in a postgame ceremony. The 11 seniors were: Annie McCarty (SR/Mason, Mich.), Kerry Devney (SR/Brownsburg, Ind.), Trisha Martinez (SR/Brea, Calif.), Katie Pannabecker (SR/Leo, Ind.), Jordan Harris (SR/Reidsville, N.C.), Nicole Biggs, Susan Anthony, Allie Custer (SR/Westerville, Ohio), Sarah Nyhoff (SR/Littleton, Colo.), Nikki Lehman (SR/Greenfield, Ind.), and Tori Magner (SR/Vernon, Ind.).
“This class literally changed the program,” said Strader. “I could not be more blessed as a coach to work with 11 phenomenal young women that have a heart for Christ and an amazing work ethic. They care so much and have invested so much. They are literally the reason why this program is rebuilding and back on the rise. Couldn’t be more blessed.”
