Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) score two early goals in the second half to overcome the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer team 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Wildcat Field.
The Cougars overcame a one goal deficit after Katie Pannabecker scored the lone goal of the first half. Nicole Biggs assisted on the tally in the 14th minute. The Wildcats outshot the Cougars 5-4 in the opening half with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
“In the first half we possessed and did everything we needed to,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. “But we probably should have come away with another goal. Again, our shooting percentage is haunting us. One for 10 is not what we need to do to win games.”
Mount Vernon Nazarene (7-5-1, 3-1-0 CL) opened the second half with two quick strikes to take the 2-1 lead. Casey Apple tied the score in the 52nd minute and Jackie Mourne scored the game-winner in the 58th minute.
Indiana Wesleyan(5-5-1, 2-2-0 CL) was able to mount pressure late in the second half but came up empty.
“We misfired on a couple shots on their end late,” continued Bratcher. “Maybe we tried too hard and didn’t get the poise.”
It was a very evenly played match overall as Indiana Wesleyan held a slight 10-9 shots advantage and both teams recorded five shots on goal. MVNU took seven corner kicks to six for Indiana Wesleyan.
Rachel Fulkerson was in goal for Indiana Wesleyan and she allowed both goals on the five that were on target. She ended the evening with three saves.
Indiana Wesleyan will play a second straight home match as IWU hosts Grace (Ind.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. It is the Homecoming match for the Indiana Wesleyan.
