Box Score UPLAND, Ind. -- Rain did not dampen a great day for the Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team as IWU defeated Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in Upland, Indiana.
"We came out and played with intensity today for the whole game," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. "It's what we need to do to survive and win games."
The game-winning goal came during an eventful one minute stretch midway through the second half. Taylor (8-5-2, 3-3-1 MCC) scored in the 67th minute to even the score at 1-1. Just 41 seconds later Indiana Wesleyan took the lead with an own-goal that a Trojan knocked into their own goal.
"After they scored on a misplay in the box we turned right around and showed our courage and what we are made of," added Bratcher. "We went down there and put pressure on them. We put the ball in the box and they made a mistake and they put the ball in."
Indiana Wesleyan (7-8-1, 2-4-1 MCC) scored the first goal of the match late in the first half when freshman midfielder Annette Somercik beat the Taylor goalkeeper on a breakaway in the 42nd minute.
"Annette scored her first collegiate goal," stated Bratcher. "It was a great pick me up and it energized us right before halftime."
The Wildcats outshot the Trojans 8-4 in the first half, but were forced to withstand a furious TU attack over the final 45 minutes. The Trojans finished with 13 shots in the half to just one for the Wildcats. During the final 10 minutes of play, IWU was forced to play a midfielder and a forward on the back line due to injuries. But the Wildcats also received great play in net from Rachel Fulkerson, who made five saves for the victory.
"Rachel played a great game today in goal," said Bratcher. "She made a great save in the last nine minutes to help keep us in the lead."
The contest was played in rainy and very wet conditions as the area has been soaked with rain for over 24 hours.
"We had to modify our game plan because of all the bad weather," stated Bratcher. "Fortunately it worked out really well for us today. The girls played smart and hard and it was a much needed win."
Indiana Wesleyan returns home for their next match which will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 against Grace (Ind.) College.
