Box Score MARION, Ind. -- A battle of NAIA top-10 women's soccer programs ended at Wildcat Field with host Indiana Wesleyan University triumphant over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College by a 3-1 score on Tuesday night.
No. 10-ranked Indiana Wesleyan answered No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson's goal in the 13th minute with three unanswered goals for the huge early season victory.
"It was unbelievable," stated and excited Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. "We did everything exactly how we wanted to do it tonight against a top NAIA program."
Lindsey Wilson struck early in the contest as junior midfielder Elisha Fry knocked home a corner kick in the 13th minute past Indiana Wesleyan sophomore keeper Beth Anne Nowak, who just missed the save to the far post.
But the Wildcats picked up pressure after falling behind early and earned four corner kick opportunities in a two minute stretch just after the Blue Raider goal.
In the 31st minute of action Indiana Wesleyan senior forward Megan Marshall gained possession in the box off a turnover and beat the Lindsey Wilson keeper to the near post to tie the match at 1-1. Just two minutes later Indiana Wesleyan struck again with the eventual game-winning goal in the 33rd minute.
Senior midfielder Brittany Smith dribbled down the middle of the field and evaded defenders until she reached the 18-yard box on the right side. From there Smith drilled home the score to the far post and a 2-1 IWU advantage.
The first half ended with the Wildcats leading 2-1 and a 4-2 advantage on shots.
The second half opened with even play for the first 24 minutes. As Indiana Wesleyan pressured the Lindsey Wilson 18-yard box, Smith crossed a ball to a wide open Marshall right in front of goal. She beat the keeper for an insurance goal in the 69th minute and a 3-1 lead.
Bratcher said, "We wanted to pressure them tonight so we used Megan (Marshall) up front for a three forward attack. It worked and we were able to create the pressure which led to scoring opportunities."
Lindsey Wilson finished the match with a flurry of shot attempts but Nowak made the save on all three that were on goal. LWC ended with a 13-6 advantage for the match and with a 5-4 lead in shots on goal.
"All the credit goes to the players, coaches and training staff tonight," added Bratcher. "We were well prepared and got the result we worked really hard for."
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 2-0-0 this season while Lindsey Wilson drops to 2-1-0.
The Wildcats remain home for the next contest which will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 4 against University of Minnesota-Crookston.
