Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Forward Megan Marshall continued to shine Wednesday night in leading No. 8-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer in a rout of Taylor (Ind.) University by a 7-1 margin at Wildcat Field.
In one of the biggest matches of the season for the Wildcats, with Grant County rival Taylor in town on Senior Night, Marshall stole the show with one of her best performances of the season. The senior recorded a hat trick and added a pair of assists for an eight point evening.
Marshall, a NAIA All-American Second Team selection a year ago, extends her NAIA leading assist total to 19 and jumps to second in the country in total points with 57. The Elgin, Illinois native notches her second consecutive match with a hat trick and is now third in the NAIA with 19 goals on the season.
On Wednesday night the Wildcats would break the game open midway through the opening half with a four goal explosion during a 13-minute span.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Johnston hammered home the first score of the night for Indiana Wesleyan in the 21st minute with assists to Marshall and senior midfielder Brittany Smith. Less than four minutes later Smith would register her second assist of the night on the game-winner from sophomore forward Kylie Dial.
Marshall would complete the first half scoring frenzy with a pair of goals in the 29th minute and 33rd minute for the 4-0 halftime lead. Dial and junior forward Tori Lee earned the assists on the Marshall goals.
Indiana Wesleyan outshot Taylor 14-2 in the first 45 minutes of the match and held a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The first goal of the second half came in the 59th minute for the Wildcats. Dial found the back of the net for her second tally of the night with Marshall assisting on the play. Marshall then completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 68th minute as Indiana Wesleyan built their advantage to 6-0.
Taylor cracked the scoreboard in the 74th minute when junior forward Taylor Hale cleaned up a ball in the box for an unassisted goal. But Indiana Wesleyan quickly recaptured their six goal advantage less than two minutes later with a goal by sophomore forward Kelsey Johnston. Senior defender Kim Walton assisted on the goal that increased the IWU lead to 7-1.
Indiana Wesleyan outshot Taylor 22-13 on the night and held a 15-10 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Anne Nowak made four saves for Indiana Wesleyan to earn the win in net. Freshman Rachel Fulkerson made three stops in relief.
The Wildcats' win streak rises to nine wins in a row as their record climbs to 13-2-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference. Taylor falls to 9-6-0 on the year and 3-4-0 in MCC play.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to action this Saturday at 1 p.m. with a road match at Grace (Ind.) College in Winona Lake, Indiana. With a win, Indiana Wesleyan would clinch at least a tie for the MCC regular season championship.
