Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College upended the No. 18-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team 4-1 on the Wildcats' home opener Monday night at Wildcat Field.
It was the first match played on the field with the new bleachers and lights.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the 9th minute and 15th minute.
"We fell behind early and we can not do that against such a good squad like them," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. "They are highly ranked for a good reason."
Lindsey Wilson (2-0-0) added a third goal in the 28th minute to stretch their advantage to 3-0. But the Wildcats rebounded with their first goal of the night in the 33rd minute. With a foul in the 18-foot box, Indiana Wesleyan (2-1-0) was rewarded with a penalty kick. Sophomore Megan Marshall took advantage of the situation and found the back of the net to make it a 3-1 contest, which the scored remained until halftime.
Lindsey Wilson recorded the only goal of the second half in the 59th minute to complete the scoring.
Melissa Gingerich made four saves in the net for the Wildcats as she allowed all four Blue Raider goals. Lindsey Wilson out-shot Indiana Wesleyan 13-3 for the contest.
"They scored a pair of easy goals early, but we were able to hold them at bay in the shots department," said Bratcher. "We were able to chase them down and force them to make some mistakes. I was very happy with how we played on the defensive side of the ball tonight."
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9, as the Wildcats travel to play Cedarville (Ohio) University.
