Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The 2013 season has come to a close for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s soccer team following a 2-0 defeat on the road to Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Crossroads League Tournament First Round.
It was an evenly played match that No. 3-seed Saint Francis won by scoring single goals in each half. USF advances to the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals next Saturday and will host No. 7 Taylor (Ind.). Taylor upset No. 2-seed Grace (Ind.) in a shootout.
“I am really proud of the way we played today,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Dr. John Bratcher. “We played the whole 90 minutes as hard as we could. Played very good soccer and were good defensively with good teamwork. We just didn’t make our breaks when they were there. The team played hard and it was a good game.”
The loss also ends the tenure of Bratcher as the head coach of the women’s soccer program. Bratcher announced before the season he would step away from the team after 12 seasons to follow his wife to her new job in Florida.
Sarah Freygang scored the game-winner in the 34th minute for the Cougars. USF outshot Indiana Wesleyan 7-4 in the opening period
In the second half, Emily Richardson gave Saint Francis a 2-0 cushion with a tally in the 69th minute. The USF goal would be the only one of the half despite Indiana Wesleyan holding a 7-4 advantage in shots. Each team finished the match with 11 shots while IWU took six shots on goal and USF took five.
Indiana Wesleyan ends the season with a 7-9-0 record. The team tied for fifth in the Crossroads League at 4-5-0.
