Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women's soccer team allowed just three shots all night in a key 3-0 victory over visiting University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Friday night at Wildcat field.
With the win, Indiana Wesleyan leap frogs over Saint Francis for third place in the Mid-Central College Conference standings and keeps the Wildcats just one loss behind the conference leader. IWU is now 9-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the MCC. Saint Francis drops to 10-4-1 and 3-2-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Brittany Smith provided all the offense that Indiana Wesleyan would need. She scored the first two goals of the match and assisted on the third.
Smith received a through ball from freshman Kristin Perrine to beat the USF keep and give Indiana Wesleyan the early 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute.
Early in the second half Smith struck again. Senior Amy Hockersmith centered a pass across the net to an awaiting Smith. She headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute of action.
Just over two minutes later, Smith and Perrine found sophomore Megan Marshall for the third and final goal of the night which put the match out of reach.
Indiana Wesleyan out-shot Saint Francis 17-3 on the night. The Wildcats peppered the net with 11 shots on goal.
Senior Melissa Gingerich collected three saves as she played 85 minutes in net for the combined shutout.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22 as the Wildcats host Huntington (Ind.) University in the final regular season home match of the year.
