BASEBALL SPLITS SEASON-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan baseball team split a doubleheader Thursday afternoon against Cumberland. It marked the first two games of the season, which were rescheduled – and it started a day earlier than expected. The Wildcats lost the first game 17-4 before picking up a hard-fought 5-4 win in the nightcap, delivering first year head coach Ian Macdonald his first career win.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
 

 
  • Down 2-0 in the second, IWU plated a run on a fielder's choice by Jake Thompson, making it 2-1.
  • The Wildcats knotted the game in the third inning with another run but CU took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning.
  • The home team added three in the fifth and 11 in the sixth but the Wildcats scored two runs in the seventh off a single from Ty Mathews and a sacrifice fly by Luke Roman
  • Mathews led the way with two hits, including a double, to go along with one RBI. Jake Thompson drove in one and scored once while Roman drove in a run.
  • Drue Young worked five innings and had seven strikeouts. Gabe Stout and Dylan Bryant also saw time on the mound and each struck out a batter.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
 

 
  • Nick Wiley gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run in the third stanza. 
  • Tied at 1-1, MJ Stavola and Andrew Sinish registered hits, driving in runs in the fourth for a 3-1 advantage. 
  • Stavola came up big with a solo homerun in the sixth for a 4-3 advantage. Jeff Pawlik's groundout plated Colin Yoder in the seventh for what turned out to be the game-winning run. 
  • Wiley and Stavola led the way with three hits apiece. Stavola tallied two RBI and scored two runs. Stavola posted a pair of extra-base hits in the victory. 
  • Brock Buckley worked 3.0 innings and registered three strikeouts. Will Eldridge threw 3.2 innings and had four strikeouts. With the bases loaded, Cam LaFuze closed the door, finalizing the 5-4 victory to pick up the save.
