MARION, Ind. - Last week during the men's and women's basketball games, Indiana Wesleyan Athletics conducted the second-annual Academic Recognition Night. The department honored and celebrated the IWU faculty members as well as the recent academic achievements of the IWU student-athletes. The evening was filled with pride, honor, and applause as the university community came together to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of both faculty members and student-athletes.
"It was great to celebrate the academic achievements of our student-athletes and thank our faculty for their hard work," said Associate Athletics Director Hannah Miller. "Our faculty routinely go above and beyond in their support of all their students and our department appreciates the extra time and effort they give to help student-athletes succeed."
For the 2022-23 academic year, the athletic department had an overall GPA of 3.21. Seventy-one percent of student-athletes had a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00, with 30 students finishing the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Last year, 17 of our 21 teams earned the NAIA Scholar-Team distinction, which recognizes teams with a collective GPA of 3.0 and above. Additionally, last year 159 students were named an NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete, an award that goes to sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a 3.50 or better GPA.
So far this year the NAIA has recognized scholar-athletes in the six fall championship sports. Across these six teams, IWU student-athletes have garnered 67 NAIA Daktronics scholar-athlete awards.
Student-athletes study in each of the University's academic divisions with the top-five most selected majors for student-athletes this year being exercise science, nursing, business administration, sports management, and finance. Like all students, student-athletes participate in clinical and practicum experiences, internships, and student teaching placements, while also practicing and competing in their sport.
In total, 328 student-athletes were honored whose hard work in the classroom has earned them the special distinction of having a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better, including 25 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.
