CARROLLTON, Texas – Indiana Wesleyan University Head Athletic Trainer Zach Hobson, PhD, LAT, ATC has been named the National Athletic Trainers' Association Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine Head Athletic Trainer of the Year for the NAIA, the organization announced Thursday.
"It is an honor to receive this award from the NATA-ICSM," Hobson said. "As I think about my fellow Head Athletic Trainers in the Crossroads League alone, I can't help but feel undeserving. I can only thank the Lord for His hand in my life, as well as the many family members, friends, and mentors who have invested in both my spiritual growth and professional development."
Each year the Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine recognizes one individual for exceptional performance as a head athletic trainer in each of the following collegiate divisions: NCAA D1, NCAA D2, NCAA D3, NAIA, Two-Year Institution, and Club/Intramural/Recreational Sports. Award recipients are actively involved in their community or campus, athletic training associations and promotion of the profession.
"I believe this award is also a reflection of the incredible staff and faculty I have the privilege of working alongside each day," continued Hobson. "Their wisdom, encouragement, and grace have made all the difference in my role. It is an honor to lead this group as we strive to glorify the Lord in how we serve the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and athletic training students at Indiana Wesleyan University."
In his role at IWU, Hobson oversees the 10-member athletic training staff that provides coverage for the University's 24 varsity sports. He joined the Indiana Wesleyan University Athletic Training staff in the spring of 2022, before being promoted to Head Athletic Trainer in the fall of 2022. Hobson currently provides medical services to the women's volleyball, softball, and men's cross country teams.
"It comes as no surprise that Zach would be nominated for and receive this honor," said
Hannah Miller, Interim Director of Athletics. "He leads a team of incredible athletic trainers who provide high-level care for our students. When I visit the clinic, I see a welcoming and safe environment for students where colleagues collaborate in order to provide the best possible care, and Zach helps drive the culture that produces such an environment. He cares deeply for his student-athletes and his staff and it is a joy to serve alongside him in the mission of our department."
