BASEBALL TOPS MVNU TO STAY IN WINNERS BRACKET OF CROSSROADS LEAGUE TOURNAMENT

MARION, Ind. – The No. 16 and top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan baseball team knocked off Mount Vernon Nazarene Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1 on Day 2 of the Crossroads League Tournament.

INSIDE THE BOX

The game was scoreless until the Wildcats broke the tie with a run in the fourth inning. Colby Jenkins led off the stanza with a base knock and moved to third on Tanner Killian's hit to center field. Two batters later, he scored on a sacrifice bunt from MJ Stavola.
IWU pushed the margin to 2-0 with a run in the sixth inning. With one down, Stavola was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Blake Storr drew a walk. Jeff Morton came in as a pinch hitter and delivered a hit, driving in Stavola for the two-run advantage.
The Cougars cut the margin in half in the bottom of the inning.
Denver Blinn pushed the lead to 3-1 with a solo round-tripper in the top of the ninth.
For the game, Blinn and Jenkins had two hits apiece. BLinn, Morton and Stavola each drove in a run while Blinn, Jenkins and Stavola all crossed home.
Hunter Hoffman worked seven strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits while striking out six. Jake Engelkes threw two innings, striking out two, en route to earning the save.

NEXT TIME OUT

The Wildcats take the field again Monday against third-seeded Huntington at 4 p.m.
