BASEBALL OPENS LEAGUE TOURNAMENT WITH WIN OVER BETHEL

Box Score MARION, Ind. – The No. 19 and top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan baseball team battled a weather delay and a tough Bethel University team in the opening round of the Crossroads League Tournament and posted a 16-10 victory.


GAME VITALS
  • Indiana Wesleyan 16, Bethel 10

INSIDE THE BOX 
  • IWU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Tye Thixton and Denver Blinn posted back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 edge. Blinn came home on an error for a 2- advantage. 
  • Colby Jenkins doubled and scored two batters later when Lucas Goodin lifted a sacrifice fly. MJ Stavola belted a two-out homer for a 4-0 margin.
  • The Wildcats pushed the score to 5-0 in the second after Blake Storr singled and later scored on a Blinn base knock to center field.
  • IWU made it 7-0 in the third when Nick Coy launched a two-run homer over the left field fence, scoring Stavola. 
  • After the Pilots made it 7-3 in the fourth, the home squad responded with a pair of runs. With two down, Blinn singled and swiped second. He raced home on a Jenkins double. Tanner Killian's base hit allowed Jenkins to race home for the six-run advantage.
  • The teams were forced to wait during a weather delay. Afterwards, the Pilots scored three runs in the sixth, making it a 9-6 contest.
  • Leading 9-7, Storr singled in Goodin with one away in the seventh. Thixton singled in Coy and Storr for a five-run advantage. Moments later, an error allowed Jeff Morton and Thixton to score. 
  • The Pilots battled back, making it 14-10 with a three-run eighth inning. IWU responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame when Thixton doubled in Coy and Luke Roman for a 16-10 score.
  • Blinn, Coy, Storr and Thixton had three hits apiece. Blinn and Thixton drove in four runs each while Coy crossed home three times. Blinn, Thixton, Jenkins, Stavola and Storr each were plated twice.
  • Jon Young worked five strong innings, posting six strikeouts. He gave up three runs on five hits. Braedon Norman tossed three innings of work while Isaiah Rivera threw the ninth inning.


NEXT TIME OUT
  • The Wildcats take the field again tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the winner of Saint Francis and Mount Vernon Nazarene.
