Baseball Opens League Play with Sweep of Bethel

MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan baseball won both ends of a doubleheader vs. Bethel (Ind.) on Tuesday at Wildcat Field. Jon Young and Caleb Eder were terrific on the mound for the Wildcats as they allowed a combined two earned runs over 15.0 innings.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bethel grabbed a quick 1-0 lead just two batters into the game with a single, passed pall, then a double.
  • In the 4th inning, Taylor Staff laid down a squeeze bunt to tie the game. There was a bobble on the play and everyone was safe with runners on first and second base.
  • Shea Durham followed with a bunt single and a wild throw to first base allowed Grant Thompson to score from second base.
  • Jordan Wharton capped the three run inning with a double to deep left-center field for a 3-1 lead.
  • Bethel loaded the bases with two outs in the 7th inning. IWU brought in Johnny Rohde and he threw one pitch and induced a pop foul to end the game.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Caleb Eder did not allow a hit until the 5th inning. But Bethel plated three runs in the 5th inning on two hits and four Wildcat errors. Two of the three runs were unearned.
  • Indiana Wesleyan tied the score 3-3 in the 7th inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Grant Thompson and Shea Durham hit a two-out RBI single on a full count.
  • Ryan Bixler hit a double to lead off the 9th inning. IWU loaded the bases with two outs when Caleb Eder stepped to the plate. Eder was hit by the pitch which allowed Bixler to score the game-winning run.
  • Caleb Eder:  8.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Brandon Shaffer:  3-for-5
  • Grant Thompson:  1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
     

NEXT TIME OUT

  • Indiana Wesleyan plays a single 9-inning game on Wednesday vs. Huntington (Ind.). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
