Baseball Sets New Single Season Win Mark, Advances in CL Tournament

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) had three hits and three RBI to lead No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan University baseball past No. 7 Goshen (Ind.) 6-3 in a Crossroads League Tournament elimination game at Forest Glen Park in Huntington, Indiana. The win is the 33rd of the season and sets a new program record for wins in a single season.

What Went Down

  • Goshen struck quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning. Vincent Cashera hit a sac fly and Ryan Hartig hit an RBI single. The two earned runs were double the amount that IWU starting pitcher Kyle Hall (FR/Chatham, Ill.) had allowed all season long in 44.0 innings.
  • Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the 1st inning with a solo home run to right field.
  • Goshen threatened again in the 2nd inning as they loaded the bases with two out. Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) entered in relief and induced a ground ball from Vincent Cashera to end the threat.
  • Brandon Shaffer put Indiana Wesleyan on top in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a two-run bomb to center field for a 3-2 Wildcat lead.
  • In the 5th inning, Goshen again loaded the bases and had just one out. Bryan Beachy got a strikeout for the second out but Austin Rook drew a walk to tie the game 3-3. Cody McCoy struck out to end the frame.
  • Derek Shomon led off the IWU 5th inning with a double down the line. He scored on a Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.) single for a 4-3 lead. Indiana Wesleyan left the bases loaded to end the inning.
  • Brandon Shaffer drilled a double to score Logan Tomlinson (JR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) from first base as Indiana Wesleyan increased their lead to 5-3 in the 6th inning. Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) added another run on a RBI double for the 6-3 score.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) entered in the 8th inning and closed out the game for the Wildcats. He did not allow a hit and walked one. He struck the final two Maple Leafs out to earn his sixth save of the season.
  • Brandon Shaffer finished 3-for-5 at the plate and was a triple shy of the cycle. He knocked in three runs and scored twice. Derek Shomon, Caleb Eder, and Andrew Breytenbach all added a pair of hits.
  • Bryan Beach earned the win in relief to improve to 8-3. He allowed one run on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out seven.
  • Indiana Wesleyan outhit Goshen 13-11 in the win. Goshen stranded 12 runners on base while Indiana Wesleyan left 9.

  • Indiana Wesleyan advances in the Crossroads League Tournament. They are scheduled to play the loser of the next game between No. 2 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) and No. 3 Spring Arbor (Mich.) at approximately 7:45 p.m. later tonight if weather permits. The game will be played at Forest Glen Park in Huntington, Indiana.
