Baseball Rallies for Split at Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball scored three runs in the final inning to earn a come-from-behind victory over Marian (Ind.) in the opening game as the two teams split a doubleheader. The win in the opener tied a program record for wins in a season when IWU went 32-24 in the 2008 season.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Neither team scored until Marian cracked the scoreboard with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th inning. Marian left runners on second and third base to end the inning.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) tied the game 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the 7th inning.
  • With two runners on, Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) and Logan Tomlinson (JR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) were hit in consecutive at bats to put Indiana Wesleyan ahead 2-1.
  • Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) drove home a run with a single for the 3-1 lead.
  • Kyle Hall (FR/Chatham, Ill.) entered in relief of Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) and pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning to collect the save.
  • Bryan Beachy improved to 7-3 this season as he allowed one run on five hits in 6.0 innings.
  • Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.), Caleb Eder, and Caleb Birkey all contributed two hits in the win.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Marian scored the game-winning run with a sac fly in the 3rd inning. MU added an insurance run with a base hit in the 4th inning for the 2-0 score.
  • Indiana Wesleyan threatened in the 2nd inning with two in scoring position and one out but failed to score. IWU also loaded the bases in the 4th inning and failed to score.
  • The Wildcats outhit the Knights 5-3. Andrew Breytenbach was 3-for-3 while Caleb Birkey added a 1-for-2 performance with a walk.
  • Jacob Gividen (SO/Portage, Mich.) (7-2) took the loss. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- on three hits in 6.0 innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five Knights.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan completes the regular season tomorrow at Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). First pitch is at 2 p.m. in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
