Baseball?s Historic Season Comes to an End vs. Keiser

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- No. 2-seed Keiser (Fla.) defeated No. 5-seed Indiana Wesleyan University 3-1 at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in the Montgomery Bracket. The loss brings a close to the best season in program history that witnessed many firsts and new records, including most wins in a season and the first trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

What Went Down

  • Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) led off for Indiana Wesleyan and socked a home run in the top of the 1st inning for the 1-0 Wildcat lead.
  • Gabby Mundo hit an RBI single for Keiser to tie the game 1-1 in the 5th inning.
  • Jesus Fuenmayor laid down a bases load bunt single with two out in the 6th inning as Keiser earned their first lead of the game at 2-1. Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) escaped any more trouble in the inning as he struck out Andrew Danner to leave three stranded.
  • Tyler Goff smacked an RBI single to right as Keiser added an insurance run in the 7th inning. The run put Keiser in the lead by a 3-1 margin.
  • Indiana Wesleyan had three hits in the first two innings but Keiser starting pitcher Keivan Berges faced the minimum over the final 7.0 innings. Brandon Shaffer had hits in the 3rd and 9th innings but was erased both times by double plays.
  • All three Keiser runs were scored with two outs.
  • Brandon Shaffer finished 3-for-4 and was a double shy of the cycle.
  • Caleb Eder (6-7) took the loss as he surrendered three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Eder walked five and struck out six.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan wraps up the season with a 37-25-1 record and were co-champions of the Crossroads League Tournament. IWU went 1-2 at the Montgomery Bracket in the program’s first ever appearance at the NAIA National Championship.
