Top-Seed Auburn Montgomery Hands IWU Baseball First Loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball lost a 10-3 decision on Tuesday to top-seed Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) in the final game of the day at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round Montgomery Bracket. IWU plays an elimination game Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET.

What Went Down

  • Auburn Montgomery built an 8-0 lead with two runs in each the 3rd and 4th innings and four more runs in the 5th inning.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) led off the 6th inning with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Nick Yoder (SR/Millersburg, Ohio). IWU trailed 8-1.
  • Auburn Montgomery scored two more in the 7th inning to increase their advantage to 10-1.
  • In the 8th inning, Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) hit an RBI single to center to score Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) but Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.) was thrown out at the plate. IWU now trailed 10-2.
  • Derek Shomon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the Wildcats’ run in the 9th inning. That run provided the final score of 10-3.
  • Jacob Gividen (SO/Portage, Mich.) (9-4) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs -- three earned -- in 4.0 innings. Matt Blankenship (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) pitched 2.0 innings while Alexander Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) and Marcus Price (JR/Hartford City, Ind.) each pitched 1.0 inning of relief.
  • Auburn Montgomery outhit Indiana Wesleyan, 13-10. IWU left 10 runners on base.
  • Derek Shomon, Caleb Eder, and Craig Nesselhuf each contributed two hits.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan plays Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET in the Montgomery Bracket. IWU will play the winner of No. 2-seed Keiser (Fla.) and No. 4-seed LSU Shreveport.
