Taylor Bests IWU Baseball with Pair of Shutouts

MARION, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) finished off the season sweep of Indiana Wesleyan University baseball with two wins on Saturday at Wildcat Field. Indiana Wesleyan failed to score in either game on Saturday and finished the four game series with just two runs.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Taylor plated two runs in the 2nd inning which was aided by two Indiana Wesleyan errors.
  • Indiana Wesleyan threatened in the 3rd inning as the first two Wildcats reached base with the heart of the order up. But the next three hitters were put down in order.
  • Taylor added single runs in each of the 5th and 7th innings to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Indiana Wesleyan attempted a rally in the 7th inning as they put two on base. But Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) struck out to end the game for the 4-0 Taylor victory.
  • Jacob Gividen (SO/Portage, Mich.) suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 7-1. He gave up four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 7.0 innings. Gividen struck out eight Trojans.
  • Taylor starting pitcher Luke Hunter was the story of the game as he struck out 14 in a four hit complete game shutout.

 

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • The Trojans scored the only runs of the game in the 4th innings. The two runs came on two hits, a walk, and a Wildcat error.
  • The Wildcats had an opportunity in the 6th inning. Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) singled and Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.) drew a walk with two outs. Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) then hit a bomb to straight away center field but Trojan CF Sam Weiss made a tremendous play on the warning track to rob Eder and keep the Wildcats scoreless.
  • Matt Blankenship (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) took the loss on two runs -- one earned -- on four hits in 7.0 innings. He walked two and struck out six.
  • Jordan Crabb earned the win for the Trojans with a complete game shutout on just 82 pitches. He allowed three hits and struck out four.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan closes out their regular season home schedule as they host Goshen (Ind.) on Tuesday. The Crossroads League doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
