Cabe Pitches Baseball Past Indiana Tech

MARION, Ind. -- Steve Cabe (SR/Niles, Mich.) pitched a gem in his first appearance of the season as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball defeated visiting Indian Tech 5-3 at Wildcat Field. Cabe allowed a pair of runs on two hits in 6.2 innings.

What Went Down

  • Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) led off for Indiana Wesleyan and hit a triple in the 1st inning. He later scored on a Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) deep fly ball to left field.
  • Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) hit a 2-out single to shallow center field in the 3rd inning which brought home Taylor Staff (JR/Springfield, Ill.) for the 2-0 lead.
  • Indiana Tech cut the lead in half with a 4th inning run.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) put the Wildcats up 3-1 in the 6th inning on a fielder’s choice ground out.
  • The Warriors cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 7th inning but the Wildcats got the run right back with a two-out bases loaded walk. Brandon Shaffer was down 0-2 in the count before earning the walk.
  • Indiana Tech scored in the 8th inning to trail 4-3 and had a runner on first base with nobody out. Alexander Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) entered in relief and retired the next three batters to get out of the jam with the tying run stranded at third base.
  • Nick Yoder (SR/Millersburg, Ohio) gave the Wildcats and insurance run with a RBI single in the 8th inning for a 5-3 lead.
  • Josh Mawhorr (SR/Muncie, Ind.) made his first appearance on the mound this season in the 9th inning. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save.
  • Steve Cabe (1-0) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on two hits in 6.2 innings. He walked two and struck out three.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor (Ind.) open a series on Thursday at 5 p.m. The IWU-Taylor Rivalry Game sponsored by Marion General Hospital will be played at Wildcat Field.
