Baseball Wins Extra Inning Affair to Earn Split at Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Taylor Staff (JR/Springfield, Ill.) had the game-winning RBI in the 8th inning to push Indiana Wesleyan University to a 4-3 extra inning victory over Bethel (Ind.) in the opening game on Thursday. Bethel won game two 5-3 as the teams split the doubleheader.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) produced an RBI single in the 3rd inning as Indiana Wesleyan led 1-0.
  • Bethel plated three runs in the 5th inning to take a 3-1 lead. IWU starting pitcher Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) was replaced by Kyle Hall (FR/Chatham, Ill.) during the inning.
  • Indiana Wesleyan quickly tied the score 3-3 in the top of the 6th inning. Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) hit a clutch 2-out double to score Derek Shomon and Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.).
  • In the 8th inning, Taylor Staff grounded out to first base with the bases loaded which allowed Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) score the game-winning run.
  • Kyle Hall pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning to secure the 4-3 victory for Indiana Wesleyan. Hall improves to 3-1 on the season as he did not allow a run on 2 hits in 3.1 innings.
  • Bryan Beachy took a no-decision as he gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in 4.2 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 6 Pilots.
  • Derek Shomon was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI while Caleb Birkey was 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and 2 runs driven in.  

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Bethel opened the scoring with a 1st inning run. Indiana Wesleyan tied the score 1-1 on a Craig Nesselhuf RBI single in the 4th inning.
  • Bethel quickly regained the lead in the home half of the 4th with 3 runs on 2 hits. An error on the first batter of the inning proved costly as all 3 runs in the inning became unearned.
  • Derek Shomon and Craig Nesselhuf had RBI hits in the top of the 6th inning to close the gap to 4-3. But Bethel got one of those runs back in the home half for the 5-3 final score.
  • Alexander Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) (3-2) suffered the loss in relief. All three runs he allowed in 1.1 innings were unearned.
  • Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.), Derek Shomon, and Craig Nesselhuf all had two hits. Nesselhuf and Shomon each clubbed a double while Caleb Birkey added a pair of walks.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan and Bethel conclude their season series on Saturday in Mishawaka, Indiana. The final two games of the series begins at 1 p.m. at Jenkins Field.
