Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. Spring Arbor

MARION, Ind. -- Two of the top baseball teams in the Crossroads League split a doubleheader on Tuesday as Indiana Wesleyan University and Spring Arbor (Mich.) each won a game at Wildcat Field. With a win in game two, Indiana Wesleyan becomes the first team to reach 10 league victories.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Indiana Wesleyan committed errors on the first two hitters of the day. Those miscues led to a Tyler Reed grand slam to give Spring Arbor the early 4-0 lead.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) drilled a home run in the fourth inning as Indiana Wesleyan trailed just 4-1.
  • Spring Arbor poured it on in the fifth inning with five runs on five hits. SAU added two more runs in the sixth inning for the 11-1 lead.
  • Wildcat starting pitcher Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) lasted 0.2 innings as he suffered the loss (6-3). He allowed four runs -- all unearned -- on 23 pitches.
  • Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) and Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) each collected a pair of hits while Caleb Eder was 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Indiana Wesleyan turned the tables in game two with their own big first inning as they scored five times.
  • The rally started with just one on and two outs. The next five batters reached with four hits and one walks for the early 5-0 advantage.
  • Up 5-1 in the third inning, Indiana Wesleyan added two more runs with RBIs by Taylor Staff (JR/Springfield, Ill.) and Thomas Sautel (FR/Littleton, Colo.).
  • Spring Arbor cut the deficit to 7-3 with two runs in the sixth inning. IWU got one of those back in the home half when Brandon Shaffer scored on a Caleb Eder fielder’s choice.
  • Jacob Gividen (SO/Portage, Mich.) (7-0) earned the victory with three runs in 7.0 innings of work. He gave up eight hits and no walks while striking out six.
  • Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) and Taylor Staff led Indiana Wesleyan with three hits apiece. Breytenbach clubbed a double while Staff had two RBI.
  • Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan begins a four-game series with Bethel (Ind.) on Thursday at 5 p.m. The doubleheader will be played in Mishawaka, Indiana.
