Baseball Completes Season Sweep of Grace

MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball won two vastly different kind of games on Monday night at Wildcat Field to complete a four-game season sweep of Grace (Ind.). IWU pounded out 23 hits in the opener en route to a 19-1 victory before scratching out a 2-1 extra inning victory in the nightcap.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Indiana Wesleyan destroyed Grace pitching in the opening game with 19 runs on 23 hits -- including 9 extra base hits.
  • Indiana Wesleyan led just 2-1 as the game went into the fourth inning. But the IWU bats exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning and nine more in the fifth inning.
  • Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) and Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) were each 4-for-5 in the win. Breytenbach had a pair of doubles and three RBI while Shomon hit a laser shot to the opposite field for a home run and had four RBI.
  • Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) finished 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, and three RBI while Logan Tomlinson (JR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) added a 3-for-4 performance with a double, a triple, three runs scored, and two runs batted in.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.), Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.), Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.), and Thomas Sautel (FR/Littleton, Colo.) all contributed multi-hit games.
  • Caleb Eder allowed one unearned run in 5.0 innings pitched to improve to 4-4 on the season. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out six Lancers. Marcus Price (JR/Hartford City, Ind.) finished up with no runs on no hits in 2.0 innings of work.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Grace scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a passed ball.
  • Indiana Wesleyan quickly tied the game 1-1 in the home half of the third inning. Andre Breytenbach hit a ground ball to shortstop that allowed Caleb Birkey to score from third base.
  • The 1-1 tie held through seven innings as the team went into extra innings.
  • Grace loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning but Matt Blankenship (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) got a swinging strike three to end the threat.
  • Brandon Shaffer opened the IWU half of the eighth inning with a walk. Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) laid down a sac bunt but the throw to second to get the lead runner was late.
  • Caleb Eder followed and he hit a slow roller to third base. The third baseman charged and his throw got past the first baseman which allowed Shaffer to score the winning run.
  • Matt Blankenship earned the win with his 1.0 inning of relief.
  • Kyle Hall (FR/Chatham, Ill.) was the starting pitcher for the Wildcats and he allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk in 7.0 innings. He struck out 11.
  • Derek Shomon and Caleb Birkey each had one hit which was all Indiana Wesleyan had in the win.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan hosts Spring Arbor (Mich.) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12 at Wildcat Field. It will be the only two games the teams play against each other this season.
