Baseball Splits DH at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball and Huntington (Ind.) finished Friday’s doubleheader with a split as each team won a one run game. Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) hit his fifth home run of the season while Nick Yoder (SR/Millersburg, Ohio) had four hits on the evening.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Huntington struck first with two runs in the opening inning. IWU starting pitcher Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) got out of even more trouble with a strike three swinging to end the inning with the bases loaded.
  • Indiana Wesleyan tied it 2-2 in the second inning with RBI singles by Thomas Sautel (FR/Littleton, Colo.) and Nick Yoder.
  • HU regained the lead 3-2 in the third inning.
  • Nick Yoder had another RBI single in the fourth inning to tie the score 3-3. Later in the inning, Derek Shomon crushed a 2-run home run for a 5-3 lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Huntington had three straight hits to cut the deficit to 5-4 and chase Beachy. Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) entered the game and escaped the HU threat with the tying run on third base.
  • Caleb Eder completed his save opportunity with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
  • Nick Yoder was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
  • Bryan Beachy (5-2) earned the victory as he surrendered four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings. Caleb Eder pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save. He did not allow a hit and struck out two.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Nick Yoder hit a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning for the first run of game two.
  • Brandon Shaffer appeared to have hit a 2-run home run in the seventh inning which would have given the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. But the umpire called a foul ball. He eventually walked to end the at bat. Derek Shomon followed and hit into an inning ending double play.
  • IWU starting pitcher Jacob Gividen (SO/Portage, Mich.) retired the first two Foresters in the seventh inning and was one out away from a complete gave shutout. But HU rallied with three straight singles to tie it 1-1 and force extra innings.
  • Huntington’s Adam Roser ended the night with a walk-off RBI double as Huntington earned a split with the 2-1 score.
  • Jacob Gividen had a no-decision. He allowed one run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work. Caleb Eder suffered the loss with one run on two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.
  • Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) and Nick Yoder each had 2-for-4 performances at the plate. Thomas Sautel was 1-for-3 with a walk.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan and Huntington play another doubleheader on Monday, April 4. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Huntington, Indiana. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, April 2 but moved to Monday due to the weather forecast.
