Baseball No-Hits Cincinnati Christian in DH Sweep

MARION, Ind. -- Four pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball swept visiting Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) at Wildcat Field. Indiana Wesleyan came-from-behind in the opening game with a three run sixth inning to win 3-2 as IWU improves to 20-9 on the season.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Neither team dented the scoreboard until Cincinnati Christian plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) hit a shallow fly ball down the left field line to score Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.) as IWU cut the lead in half 2-1.
  • Logan Tomlinson (JR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to tie the game 2-2.
  • Thomas Sautel (FR/Littleton, Colo.) hit a sac fly to score Caleb Birkey for the go-ahead run to cap a three run sixth inning. Indiana Wesleyan took the 3-2 lead into the seventh.
  • Tim Olvaney (FR/Hemet, Calif.) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the complete game victory. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits. He struck out five in 7.0 innings.
  • Craig Nesselhuf and Caleb Birkey each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Indiana Wesleyan had four pitchers combine for a no-hitter. Alexander Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) earned the win as he started and went four innings. Matt Blankenship (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio), Marcus Price (JR/Hartford City, Ind.), and Ari Kira (SR/Bellevue, Wash.) all pitched one inning in relief.
  • Craig Nesselhuf provided all the run support the pitching staff needed in the first inning with a 2-run home run.
  • The Wildcats scored four more runs in the third inning with two hits, three walks, and three batters hit by pitch.
  • Craig Nesselhuf drilled his second home run of the game in the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) drove in the final run in the sixth inning with a sac fly to score Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.).
  • Craig Nesselhuf finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two home runs, and three RBI while Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) was 2-for-4.
