Baseball Wins Weekend Series with Saint Francis

MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball scored six runs in the sixth inning to earn a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over visiting Saint Francis (Ind.) in game two at Wildcat Field. Saint Francis won the opener 3-1 as Indiana Wesleyan won three of four games this weekend against USF.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Cole Gerardot hit the eventual game-winning single with two outs in the second inning.
  • DJ Manning gave Saint Francis a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single in the fifth inning to give USF the 3-0 lead.
  • Indiana Wesleyan left 11 runners on bases, including five innings with two runners on.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) (3-3) took the loss in a complete game effort. He allowed three runs on six hits. Eder walked one and struck out four.
  • Nick Yoder (SR/Millersburg, Ohio) contributed a 2-for-2 performance for Indiana Wesleyan.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Saint Francis held a 6-1 lead after they batted in the third inning. Caleb Eder had the Indiana Wesleyan RBI with a two-out single in the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the third inning Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) crushed his 11th home run of the season to draw Indiana Wesleyan to 6-2.
  • Saint Francis had a chance to add to their advantage in the sixth inning but IWU pitcher Kyle Hall (FR/Chatham, Ill.) caught a hard-hit line drive up the middle to end the threat and keep IWU within four runs.
  • Indiana Wesleyan rallied in the sixth inning with a six spot to take an 8-6 lead.
  • The first three batters reached in the inning for the Wildcats and a Thomas Sautel (FR/Littleton, Colo.) walk brought home the first run of the inning.
  • Nick Yoder followed with a two-run single down the right field line to bring IWU to within one at 6-5.
  • Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) hit into a fielder’s choice but Sautel was able to score the game-tying run.
  • Taylor Staff (JR/Springfield, Ill.) pinch ran for Breytenbach and scored from first base when the USF centerfielder dropped a fly ball in shallow center field with two outs. The run put IWU ahead for the first time on Saturday 8-7.
  •  A Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.) RBI double was the final run of the game as Indiana Wesleyan led 8-6 heading into the seventh inning.
  • In the top of the seventh, Saint Francis had their first two batters reach. They advanced on a sac bunt.
  • Kyle Hall got a strikeout for the second out in the inning but a walk loaded the bases. But Hall got a swinging strike three to end the threat and the game.
  • Kyle Hall did not allow a run in 4.1 innings of relief. He gave up four hits and four walks but struck out six.
  • Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) and Caleb Eder each had two hits in the win while Nick Yoder was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

  • Indiana Wesleyan hosts Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) on Tuesday, March 29 at Wildcat Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
