Baseball Splits Home Opener with Aquinas

MARION, Ind. -- Bryan Beachy (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) was stellar in a two-hit complete game victory as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball beat Aquinas (Mich.) 2-0 in the first home game of the season at Wildcat Field. Aquinas earned the split with a 5-3 win in the second game.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Bryan Beachy starred in the opening game with a two-hit complete game shutout. He walked two and struck out six Saints to improve to 3-2 on the season.
  • The bats provided all the offense that Beachy needed in the first two innings.
  • Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) led off in the first inning and reached on a bunt single. He stole second base and scored on a Brandon Shaffer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) RBI single.
  • Logan Tomlinson (JR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) led off the second inning with a double and eventually scored on a sac fly off the bat of Matt Donker (SO/Holland, Mich.) for a 2-0 score.
  • IWU outhit Aquinas 5-2 in the game and was led by Logan Tomlinson’s 2-for-3 performance.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Aquinas grabbed the early lead with two runs in the first inning.
  • Indiana Wesleyan cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Logan Tomlinson RBI single.
  • The Wildcats tied the score 2-2 in the third inning on a Derek Shomon (SR/Glenview, Ill.) two-out RBI single to left-center field.
  • The Saints reclaimed the lead with a run in the fifth inning for a 3-2 lead.
  • Derek Shomon hit a monster home run over the left field fence to lead off the sixth inning for a 3-3 game.
  • Aquinas responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Aquinas did not have a hit in the inning as they drew four walks.
  • Derek Shomon finished 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Logan Tomlinson and Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) both had a hit and a walk.
  • Caleb Eder (FR/North Vernon, Ind.) (3-2) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits and six walks. He struck out five.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan next plays on Friday at Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Crossroads League opener for the Wildcats. First pitch is at 2 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
