Men?s Tennis Begins Spring Schedule with Big Win

GREENTOWN, Ind. -- The spring season is officially underway as Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis defeated Cornerstone (Mich.) 6-2 as the teams played indoors at the Howard County Tennis Center. Indiana Wesleyan earned the wins that featured two teams that are receiving votes in the current NAIA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll.

What Went Down

  • The Wildcats swept the Golden Eagles in doubles for the quick 3-0 advantage.
  • Leonard Mathews (SR/Merrillville, Ind.) and Brandon Dubuque (SR/Marion, Ind.) won the No. 1-doubles match by an 8-5 score.
  • The No. 2-doubles team of Joel Montgomery (SO/Powell, Ohio) and Gavin White (JR/Lakeland, Fla.) plus the No. 3-doubles team of Tyler Abbott (FR/Atlanta, Ga.) and Daniel Smith (SR/Crown Point, Ind.) won by the same score of 8-4.
  • Leonard Mathews claimed the victory at No. 1-singles with a 6-2, 6-0 score.
  • Joel Montgomery won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3-singles.
  • Austin Christner (SO/Goshen, Ind.) did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6-singles spot.
  • Gavin White fell 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4-singles and Tyler Abbott lost 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 in the No. 5-singles position.
  • The No. 2-singles match that had Brandon Dubuque slotted in did not play their match.

     

Extra! Extra!

  • The match with Cornerstone is the first of the spring season for Indiana Wesleyan. It was the first match for IWU since the Crossroads League Tournament in early October.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan is off for the next three weeks as their next match is not until March 18 when IWU hosts No. 17 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) at the Sutter Tennis Center.
