Baseball Earns DH Split with IU Southeast

WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Jacob Gividen (SO/Portage, Mich.) pitched a 3-hit complete game as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball collected a 3-1 win in the nightcap to take a doubleheader split with IU Southeast. Indiana Wesleyan lost their first game of the season 6-3 in the opener and now stand 7-1 on the year.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • The Grenadiers handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season. The loss ends the IWU six-game win streak to open the 2016 season.
  • IU Southeast quickly nabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Craig Nesselhuf (SR/Littleton, Colo.) ripped a 2-run double in the bottom of the first inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. IWU would get no closer the rest of the way.
  • The Wildcats had six hits in the losing effort. Craig Nesselhuf and Andrew Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) each finished with a double.
  • Alexander Breytenbach (FR/Palatine, Ill.) suffered the loss on the mound.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Indiana Wesleyan earned the doubleheader split with a 3-1 win in game two.
  • All three Wildcat runs came in the second inning.
  • Thomas Sautel (FR/Littleton, Colo.) had an RBI groundout for the first run and Caleb Birkey (SR/Granger, Ind.) followed with an RBI triple for the game-winning hit. Taylor Staff (JR/Springfield, Ill.) completed the IWU scoring with an RBI groundout.
  • Jacob Gividen pitched a complete game for the victory. He allowed just three hits and struck out four Grenadiers on just 86 pitches.
  • Andrew Breytenbach had a 2-for-3 performance with a walk and a double.

     

Next Time Out

  • The weekend series at Pikeville (Ky.) has been canceled due to impending weather. The next scheduled game for Indiana Wesleyan is at Toccoa Falls (Ga.) on March 5 as the Wildcats begin a Spring Break trip to the southeast.
