HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball was eliminated from the Crossroads League Tournament on Monday afternoon following a 9-4 loss to No. 2-seed Huntington (Ind.) at Forest Glen Field in Huntington, Indiana.
No. 6-seed Indiana Wesleyan opened the tournament on Saturday at No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) and lost 5-3. The four teams in the Huntington Bracket converged on Huntington on Monday where Indiana Wesleyan was eliminated by the host team.
The Foresters jumped all over the Wildcats in the first inning with a seven spot to lead 7-0. IWU starting pitcher Justin Sovine (SR/Wadsworth, Ohio) failed to make it through the inning as he faced seven batters and retired one. He surrendered six runs -- all earned -- on three hits, one walk, one hit batter, and one error. The Foresters added another run in the second inning to build an 8-0 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan cut into the lead with three runs in the third inning to trail 8-3. Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) hit an RBI double and Craig Nesselhuf (JR/Littleton, Colo.) hit a 2-run single to center to account for the scoring. Indiana Wesleyan trimmed the lead in half when Kaleb DeFreese (SO/Bristol, Ind.) hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for an 8-4 lead.
But the Wildcats would not score again and the Foresters added one more run in the sixth inning for the 9-4 final score.
Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) hit 3-of-5 with a triple and a run scored while Nesselhuf and Jacob Murphy (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) each contributed a pair of hits. Nesselhuf finished with two RBIs while DeFreese and Tomlinson each added one. Huntington outhit Indiana Wesleyan 12-11 for the ballgame while both teams stranded seven runners.
The Indiana Wesleyan season comes to a close with a 24-30 record.
