SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) defeated No. 6-seed Indiana Wesleyan University baseball 5-3 on Saturday afternoon in Spring Arbor during the first round of games at the Crossroads League Tournament.
First round games were played on campus sites at the higher seed. Now the tournament will move to two sites at Huntington (Ind.) and Taylor (Ind.). Indiana Wesleyan plays in the Huntington Bracket and plays No. 2-seed Huntington at 12 p.m. on Monday. No. 7-seed Bethel (Ind.) upset Huntington 3-1 today.
Indiana Wesleyan looked for the upset as well as they scored two runs in the first inning for the early 2-0 advantage. Craig Nesselhuf (JR/Littleton, Colo.) had an RBI single and Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) knocked in the other run on a fielder’s choice to shortstop.
Spring Arbor answered with a four run second inning for a 4-2 lead. Cam Screeton (SR/Rochester, Ind.) drew Indiana Wesleyan to within one run with a RBI single to right field. But Spring Arbor got that run back in the home half of the fifth inning for a 5-3 lead. Neither team scored over the final four innings.
Jacob Gividen (FR/Portage, Mich.) took the loss on the mound with five runs -- four earned -- on five hits in 5.2 innings. He walked four and struck out five. Devin Ruppert (SO/Tustin, Mich.) retired the only batter he faced in the sixth inning while Matt Blankenship (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) was perfect in two relief innings.
The Wildcats outhit the Cougars 7-5 on the afternoon. Kaleb DeFreese (SO/Bristol, Ind.) was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored while Screeton was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
