WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University added two more wins to the win column on Friday with a doubleheader sweep at Grace (Ind.) in Winona Lake, Indiana.
The Wildcats earned a 5-1 victory in the opening game and finished the sweep with a 5-4 win in 9 innings. The victories move the Wildcats to 16-16 this season and 6-4 in the Crossroads League.
Blankenship was stellar for Indiana Wesleyan in the first game with a one run complete game. He scattered three hits with zero walks in 7.0 innings while striking out four.
Indiana Wesleyan got on the board first when Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) singled home Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Cam Screeton (SR/Rochester, Ind.) hit a sac fly to score Caleb Birkey (JR/Granger, Ind.) and Tomlinson bunted to score Barnes for a 3-0 lead. IWU added two more runs in the sixth inning for a 5-0 advantage. Birkey had an RBI groundout and Jacob Murphy (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch.
Indiana Wesleyan had six hits in the game to just three for Grace. Tomlinson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Barnes was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored.
In the second game, the Wildcats took the lead first with a three run third inning. Barnes hit an RBI single while Tomlinson drilled a two run single with two outs for the 3-0 lead. The Lancers plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning but failed to score the tying run as he was stranded at second base to end the inning.
Indiana Wesleyan took the 3-2 lead into the final inning. Kennan Barnett (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) relieved starting pitcher Jack Collingsworth (JR/Apple Valley Calif.) to start the inning. Two singles with one out put Lancers on the corner and a sac fly tied the score 3-3 to force extra innings.
The game went into the ninth inning where Indiana Wesleyan scored twice for a 5-3 lead. Nick Koh (SO/Auckland, N.Z.) and Barnes led the inning off with back-to-back singles. They advanced to second and third on a passed ball and both scored on a Screeton single to right-center field.
Grace followed IWU by putting the first two batters on base in the bottom of the ninth. Craig Nesselhuf (JR/Littleton, Colo.) entered and relieved Jon Keesling (JR/Selma, Ind.) on the mound. A sac bunt moved the two Lancers up one base and placed the tying run in scoring position. A ground out scored one run and then a deep flyout to right-center field ended the game 5-4 in favor of Indiana Wesleyan.
Keesling earned the win in relief with one run in 1.0 plus innings of work while Nesselhuf earned the save with no run and no hits in 1.0 inning of work. Collingsworth received a no decision with two runs -- one earned -- on six hits in 6.0 innings.
Barnes finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Seven other Wildcats had hits as Screeton and Tomlinson each had one hit and two RBIs.
Indiana Wesleyan and Grace play another doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Miller Field in Winona Lake, Indiana.
