MARION, Ind. -- Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) gave Indiana Wesleyan a 10 inning victory in the opening game of a doubleheader with Marian (Ind.) on Monday at Wildcat Field.
Jacob Murphy (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) led off the 10th inning with an infield single and took second base on a Cody Calvert (SR/Godfrey, Ill.) sac bunt. Following a strikeout, Barnes hit a single past the second baseman to score Murphy for the 2-1 victory.
Justin Sovine (SR/Wadsworth, Ohio) went the distance and allowed one unearned run in 10.0 innings of work. He surrendered six hits and one walk to go with six strikeouts. Murphy finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Barnes and Caleb Birkey (JR/Granger, Ind.) each had two hits and one RBI.
Marian (15-16, 14-12 CL) earned a split with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap. Starting pitcher Brendon Neal pitched a no-hitter for the Knights. He walked three and struck out three Wildcats.
The lone run of the game came in the fourth inning. A leadoff double by John O’Malley led to the run following a wild pitch and a sac fly.
Jacob Gividen (FR/Portage, Mich.) pitched well for the Wildcats as he allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings. Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) reached base twice with two walks while Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) drew the other walk.
Indiana Wesleyan (23-25, 13-13 CL) will play at Wildcat Field again tomorrow afternoon against No. 23 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
