UPLAND, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University played at Taylor (Ind.) tonight in the first games under the lights at Winterholter Field in Upland, Indiana.
The Trojans collected wins in both games of the Friday doubleheader by scores of 9-2 and 9-1. The Wildcats fall to 20-22 this season as they even their Crossroads League record to 10-10. The Trojans improve to 22-16 as they also even their league record to 9-9.
Taylor jumped out to a quick lead in the opening game to chase Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Justin Sovine (SR/Wadsworth, Ohio) in the second inning. Taylor scored five runs in the first inning and added three more in the second inning as Marcus Price (SO/Hartford City, Ind.) came in to pitch. He allowed just one more run over the final 4.1 innings.
Sovine took the loss with eight runs in 1.2 innings. Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with one RBI while Kaleb DeFreese (SO/Bristol, Ind.) was 2-for-2 with a walk, a triple, and two runs scored. Caleb Birkey (JR/Granger, Ind.) finished 2-for-2 with one RBI.
The Trojans again scored early and often in game two to chase starting pitcher Matt Blankenship (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) in the third inning. TU scored two runs in the opening inning before a seven-run third inning increased their lead to 9-0. Blankenship was pulled in the third inning as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) accounted for two of the five Wildcat hits in game two. DeFreese had one RBI and Fugita scored the lone IWU run.
Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor will battle in a second doubleheader on Saturday in Upland. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
