MARION, Ind. -- Jacob Murphy (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) hit a scorching line drive that the Bethel (Ind.) third baseman was unable to handle as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball finished off a comeback victory with the walk-off hit for the 6-5 win Friday night at Wildcat Field.
The victory salvaged a doubleheader split for Indiana Wesleyan. Bethel claimed a 7-4 win in the opening game. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
Bethel led 5-3 as Indiana Wesleyan stepped to the plate in the seventh inning of the nightcap. Caleb Birkey (JR/Granger, Ind.) was hit by a pitch and Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) walked to put the tying run on base. Cam Screeton (SR/Rochester, Ind.) laid down a sac bunt to move both the runners up. Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) blooped a single over the second baseman to score Birkey and put men on the corners. Craig Nesselhuf (JR/Littleton, Colo.) put a bunt down and beat the throw to first base. The tying run in Barnes scored and Tomlinson, the potential winning run, chugged all the way around to third base on the play. Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) was intentionally walked to load the bases for Jacob Murphy. He drilled a screamer to the third baseman who was unable to collect the hard shot as Tomlinson crossed the plate for the winning score.
Devin Ruppert (SO/Tustin, Mich.) was the winning pitcher for Indiana Wesleyan as he pitched two perfect innings. Jack Collingsworth (JR/Apple Valley Calif.) started and took a no-decision with five runs in 5.0 innings.
Screeton and Kaleb DeFreese (SO/Bristol, Ind.) both had two hits for Indiana Wesleyan. DeFreese finished with a pair of doubles, Thomas Barnes had two stolen bases and two runs scored, and Nesselhuf knocked in two runs.
In the opening game, Bethel exploded for six runs in the second inning. Indiana Wesleyan cut the lead in half to 6-3 in the third inning with Nesselhuf coming through with a 2-run triple. Bethel added a run in the fourth inning and Indiana Wesleyan completed the scoring with a run in the fifth inning for the 7-4 final score.
Blankenship took the loss with seven runs -- five earned -- in 7.0 innings. He allowed 10 hits with three strikeouts.
DeFreese had a 2-for-3 performance while Nesselhuf was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Barnes was 1-for-3 with a walk and one run scored.
Indiana Wesleyan moves to 18-20 this season and 8-8 in the Crossroads League. Bethel is 9-17 overall and 6-10 in league play.
