MARION, Ind. -- Huntington (Ind.) defeated Indiana Wesleyan University baseball in both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday to wrap up a four-game season sweep over two days at Wildcat Field.
Huntington won 4-1 in the first game on Tuesday and then won the nightcap 5-3. Huntington, which swept a doubleheader yesterday at IWU, improves to 8-7 this season and 5-1 in Crossroads League play. Indiana Wesleyan drops to 14-16 and 4-4 in the league.
The Foresters quickly put runs on the board in the first inning of game one. The first two batters walked and both scored on just one hit in the inning. The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth inning before the Wildcats scored one run on a Nick Koh (SO/Auckland, N.Z.) single. That would be the only IWU run of the game as the Foresters added one more in the seventh inning for a 4-1 victory.
Cam Screeton (SR/Rochester, Ind.), Jack Collingsworth (JR/Apple Valley Calif.), and Nick Koh all had two hits in the game while Cody Calvert (SR/Godfrey, Ill.) finished 1-for-3 with a walk. Indiana Wesleyan outhit Huntington 9-4 in the game.
Brandon Watkins (SO/Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched a complete game for Indiana Wesleyan. Watkins allowed four earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out seven Foresters.
In the second game, Indiana Wesleyan struck first with a run in the first inning when Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) scored on an error off the bat of Cody Calvert.
But Huntington responded with two runs in the second inning and three more in the third inning for a 5-1 lead. Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) connected on an RBI single in the fifth inning while Jacob Murphy (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) contributed an RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. Indiana Wesleyan did not threaten in the seventh inning as they went down in order to finish the game.
Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) led Indiana Wesleyan with a 2-for-3 performance and a run scored. Fugita was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while Barnes was 1-for-2 and one RBI. Kennan Barnett (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) went the distance on the mound and gave up five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and five walks.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 2 p.m. on Thursday with a Crossroads League doubleheader at Grace (Ind.) in Winona Lake, Indiana.
