Baseball Falls To #RV Northwestern in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Indiana Wesleyan University  baseball played a single game on Tuesday and lost 7-3 to Northwestern (Iowa) during the Spring Break trip in Tucson, Arizona.

Northwestern (4-8), who received votes in the NAIA Preseason Poll, scored three runs in the third inning for the 3-0 lead. Indiana Wesleyan responded with two runs in the home half of the third inning to trim the deficit to 3-2. Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) knocked in the first IWU run with an RBI single while Cody Calvert (SR/Godfrey, Ill.) came through with a bases loaded single to score Fugita. But IWU left three stranded to end the inning.

The Red Raiders extended their lead with two runs in the sixth and eighth innings to lead 7-2. In the Wildcat eighth inning Jacob Murphy (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a fly ball to right field, and then scored on a Nick Koh (SO/Auckland, N.Z.) sac fly for a 7-3 score.

Jacob Gividen (FR/Portage, Mich.) started on the mound for Indiana Wesleyan and he surrendered five runs -- four earned -- in 6.0 innings of work. He gave up nine hits and one walk while striking out four.

Calvert finished 3-for-4 with one RBI while Murphy was 2-for-3 with one walk and two runs scored. Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) was 2-for-5 while Kaleb DeFreese (SO/Bristol, Ind.) and Preston Fugita each contributed a hit.

Indiana Wesleyan (2-5) returns to action tomorrow against Mary (N.D.) with a noon start time.
