MARION, Ind. -- After a successful start to Crossroads League play last week Indiana Wesleyan University baseball ventured out into non-league play with a doubleheader split at home against Cleary (Mich.) on Wednesday.
Cleary won the opening game by a 13-8 margin while Indiana Wesleyan rebounded to win game two 11-2. Indiana Wesleyan is now 14-12 this season while Cleary is 8-11.
Cleary opened up the first game with a six run second inning and held the lead the rest of the way. They built their advantage to 10-3 as Indiana Wesleyan came to bat in the sixth inning. IWU clawed back into the game with five runs on five hits and one Cleary error. Scott Dodd (FR/Hartford City, Ind.) belted an RBI double, Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) had an RBI single, Cameron Screeton (SR/Rochester, Ind.) followed with a 2-run single, and Cody Calvert (SR/Godfrey, Ill.) earned an RBI single for the big inning.
Indiana Wesleyan now trailed 10-8 as the game headed to the seventh inning. Cleary never gave IWU a chance in the seventh as they tacked on three runs in the top of the frame to pull away 13-8.
Barnes finished 4-of-5 in the game with a double and three RBIs while Screeton was 3-of-4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Jon Keesling (JR/Selma, Ind.) took the loss with 10 runs in 3.2 innings of work while Devin Ruppert (SO/Tustin, Mich.) allowed three runs in 3.1 innings of relief. IWU pitchers allowed 10 walks in the loss.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats scored five times in the second inning and four more in the third inning to lead 9-1 after three innings.
In the second inning, Scott Dodd opened the scoring with a two run single. Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) and Screeton each knocked in a run on ground outs. Barnes later singled home the fifth run of the inning.
Kaleb DeFreese (SO/Bristol, Ind.) hit a ground ball through the hole at second to score two runs in the third inning. Nick Koh (SO/Auckland, N.Z.) scored on a double steal and DeFreese scored on a sac fly off the bat of Fugita.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth inning to increase their advantage to 11-2. Craig Nesselhuf (JR/Littleton, Colo.) hit a long single to right center field to score Screeton and Carter Screeton (FR/Rochester, Ind.) scored on the next at bat when Matt Donker (FR/Holland, Mich.) hit a fielder’s choice to second base.
Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (JR/Apple Valley Calif.) earned the win on the mound with 5.0 solid innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Marcus Price (SO/Hartford City, Ind.) and Steven Cabe each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The Wildcats scored 11 runs on just 7 hits with DeFreese accounting for three of the hits. Cam Screeton walked twice while Nesselhuf and Taylor Staff (SO/Springfield, Ill.) each had a hit and a walk.
Indiana Wesleyan is scheduled to play again tomorrow at home against Huntington (Ind.). First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
