Baseball Drops Both Games at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Indiana Wesleyan University lost both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday to Cornerstone (Mich.) at DeWitt Field in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Cornerstone (6-11) won the opening game 10-3 and then completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory in game two.

Indiana Wesleyan (9-11) struck first in the opening game when Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) came through with a two run single in the second inning for the 2-0 lead. But Cornerstone responded with three runs in each the third and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead. IWU cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning when Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) connected on an RBI single but a four run sixth inning for Cornerstone cemented the 10-3 win for the Golden Eagles.

Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (JR/Apple Valley Calif.) was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate while Barnes was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one stolen base. Fugita finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and two RBIs. Jacob Gividen (FR/Portage, Mich.) suffered the loss as he surrendered three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.

The Golden Eagles won the second game on a walk-off squeeze for the 4-3 victory.

To open the game, Indiana Wesleyan scored first again when Fugita crossed the plate on a passed ball. Cornerstone tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning before Indiana Wesleyan reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fifth inning on a two run single by Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.). Again, in the bottom of the inning Cornerstone responded and scored two runs of their own to tie the score 3-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Indiana Wesleyan retired the leadoff hitter but back-to-back singles and then a walk loaded the bases. Evan Wagner then laid down the squeeze bunt to score Sonny Mastromatteo for the walk-off victory.

Tomlinson led the Wildcats with a 2-for-4 effort with two RBIs. Barnes earned two walks and scored one run while Fugita and Collingsworth each contributed a single and a walk.
