WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University and Concordia (Mich.) each won one game in a doubleheader that was contested at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan won the opening game 4-2 behind an impressive pitching performance from Justin Sovine (SR/Wadsworth, Ohio). Concordia earned the split with an 8-7 win in the nightcap.
In the opening game, Sovine allowed two runs -- both unearned -- in a 7.0 inning complete game. He surrendered just three hits and three walks while collecting six strikeouts.
The Wildcats (9-7) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on two hits and one error. Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) scored the first run as he stole third base and the throw from the catcher ended up in left field as Fugita scampered home on the throwing error. Later in the inning, Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) came through with a two-out RBI single to score Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.).
The Cardinals (3-9) responded in the fourth inning with two runs. The inning was extended on an error and a two-out, two run single tied the game 2-2.
Indiana Wesleyan broke the tie in the sixth inning. Cam Screeton connected on a two-out bases loaded single for the eventual game-winning RBI. Barnes came to bat next and was hit by a pitch to send another IWU runner home for a 4-2 score.
Indiana Wesleyan outhit Concordia 8-3 in the game as eight different Wildcats had a hit. Fugita was 1-for-2 with a run and two walks while Carter Screeton (FR/Rochester, Ind.) and Barnes each had a single and a walk.
In the second game, Indiana Wesleyan led 6-2 through four innings of play. But Concordia scored five in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to lead 8-6. IWU closed to within one with a run in the sixth but were denied the game-tying run.
The teams combined for 15 runs on just 9 hits. The two teams combined for 21 walks and 7 hit batters.
Cody Calvert (SR/Godfrey, Ill.) was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Carter Screeton had a hit and two walks while Fugita reached three times on walks.
Indiana Wesleyan will play at Grand Park once again on Saturday with a doubleheader against Siena Heights (Mich.).
