WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball has won six of their last seven games as they completed a doubleheader sweep of IU Southeast on Wednesday afternoon at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan won the opener 3-1 and then took the nightcap 5-1 to improve to 8-6 overall this season while IU Southeast drops to 6-4. IU Southeast boasts a three-game sweep over No. 1-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) earlier this season.
The Wildcats earned the sweep behind two stellar pitching performances from Jacob Gividen (FR/Portage, Mich.) and Kennan Barnett (SO/Newburgh, Ind.). Gividen pitched a complete game in the opener and allowed one earned run on two hits. He walked two and struck out nine Grenadiers. Barnett followed with a complete game of his own in game two. He gave up one earned run on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. He stranded eight Grenadiers on base.
In the first game, IU Southeast quickly scored with a leadoff triple which scored two batters later on a ground out. That was the only run IUSE would score and the leadoff triple was their only hit until there were two outs in the seventh inning.
Indiana Wesleyan scored all three of their runs in the top of the second inning. Craig Nesselhuf (JR/Littleton, Colo.) reached on an error and scored on a Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (JR/Apple Valley Calif.) double. Caleb Birkey (JR/Granger, Ind.) followed with a triple to score Collingsworth, Jr. and Birkey later scored on a passed ball.
IU Southeast brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning with two outs. But Gividen closed out the game as he induced a fielder’s choice to second base for the victory.
Cam Screeton was 3-for-4 at the plate while Birkey finished 2-for-2 with a run and one RBI.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan captured a quick lead with three runs in the first inning. IWU had three hits in the inning including RBI singles by Cody Calvert (SR/Godfrey, Ill.) and Logan Tomlinson (SO/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.). Calvert crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
The Wildcats continued to build on their lead in the fifth inning with two additional runs. Matt Donker (FR/Holland, Mich.) led the inning off with a double and Screeton followed with a walk. Thomas Barnes (SR/Marion, Ind.) laid down a sac bunt and the pitcher threw the ball away which allowed Donker and Screeton to score.
Barnett had a shutout brewing into the seventh inning but Chris Kemp led off the inning with a home run for the only IU Southeast run in the game.
Each team had seven hits in the second game. Barnes led IWU with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with two RBIs while Tomlinson was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base. Preston Fugita (SR/Littleton, Colo.) reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to Grand Park for their next games on Friday afternoon against Concordia (Mich.). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
