Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Saturday marked the end of the 2014-15 regular season for No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball. It ended on a high note with an 80-60 victory over Marian (Ind.) on Senior Day in Luckey Arena.
Indiana Wesleyan finishes with the best regular season in program history with a 28-2 record. The fewest losses in a season was previously set in 2006-07 when they finished 24-3 and the most wins previously in a regular season was 25 wins four different times.
“It speaks to this senior class,” Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel said of the success this season. “They are great leaders. They have been a big part of this success.”
Indiana Wesleyan ends Crossroads League play with a 16-2 record as they win the regular season title by two games over Saint Francis (Ind.). IWU heads into the Crossroads League Tournament as the No. 1-seed and has already clinched a bid to the NAIA Division II National Championship.
The Wildcats witnessed the return of Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) who had missed the previous five games. He did not attempt a shot in 18 minutes but did dish out 10 assists.
“That’s what you love about Jonny,” said Tonagel. “He just comes in a game and makes everyone better. It’s just great to have him back.”
Indiana Wesleyan led 21-19 early in the game. Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) then scored off a Marian turnover to ignite a 21-4 run to close out the half. IWU went into halftime leading 42-23.
The lead grew to 26 points in the second half on two occasions. The last of those came on a DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio) layup for a 60-34 lead with 12:52 remaining. Marian could get no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.
The Wildcats shot a blistering 60-percent (31 of 51) from the field and 57-percent (8 of 14) from 3-point range. IWU earned assists on 27 of their 31 field goals.
Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) scored a game-high 22 points with 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Vandewater contributed 17 points and 9 rebounds while Peters tallied 15 points and 4 assists. Jacob Johnson (FR/Mooresville, Ind.) came off the bench and scored nine points.
Before the game, Indiana Wesleyan celebrated its four man senior class. The senior recognized were DJ Bettinger, Josiah Godbey (SO/Indianapolis, Ind.), Tyler Greathouse (SR/Columbus, Ind.), and Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.).
“They are incredible leaders and they love their teammates,” Tonagel said of the seniors. “They’re probably playing their best basketball which speaks to the character they have.”
Indiana Wesleyan begins the Crossroads League Tournament on Wednesday. IWU hosts No. 8-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) in the First Round inside Luckey. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
