Box Score MARION, Ind. -- For the first time in 11 months the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team stepped onto the court following a loss. IWU answered the call tonight as they defeated Huntington (Ind.) 92-53 in Luckey Arena.
“Our focus was much better, we were dialed in defensively, and we shot it better tonight,” said IWU head coach Greg Tonagel. “And it sure was nice to be back home in Luckey as it’s been five weeks since we played here.”
The Wildcats set a program record with 20 straight wins that started on March 13, 2014 with a win over Reinhardt (Ga.) in the NAIA Division II National Championship First Round. The streak came to a stop on Saturday with a 78-72 loss at Marian (Ind.).
After suffering the first loss of the season, Indiana Wesleyan returned home and used a 29-1 run in the second half to send visiting Huntington packing with a 39 point defeat.
Huntington (12-5, 2-3 CL) cut a 40-30 halftime deficit to 6 points at 42-36 with 17:04 on the clock. Indiana Wesleyan went on to score the next 24 points and 29 of the next 30 points for a 71-37 lead. Huntington did not score for eight minutes and nearly went 10 minutes between field goals. Tyler Greathouse (SR/Columbus, Ind.) connected on 3-point baskets on back-to-back possessions to give Indiana Wesleyan its largest lead of the game at 89-48.
Indiana Wesleyan (16-1, 4-1 CL) shot 54.5-percent (36 of 66) from the field tonight, including 63.3-percent (19 of 30) in the second half where they outscored Huntington 52-23. IWU lit up the 3-point line at 47.8-percent (11 of 23).
“That is what we were riding early on was the really good shooting,” continued Tonagel. “It came back to us today.”
The Wildcats also dominated the glass with a 44-25 advantage in rebounds. Five Wildcats grabbed five or more rebounds, led by Nathan Bubash (SO/Munster, Ind.) with 10. He ended the night with a double-double as he scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
“Bubash was awesome,” stated Tonagel. “He played physical and he was excited to play today. He has a high motor and he sure showed that tonight.”
In all, five Wildcats tallied double digits in scoring. Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) had game-high honors with 20 points while Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) scored 15 points. Bubash had 14, DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio) earned 13 points, and Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) totaled 12 points.
Marlin also assisted on five buckets while Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) earned three assists. Indiana Wesleyan had 16 assists to just 6 turnovers.
Tonagel said, “I thought everyone who stepped on the floor tonight produced in some way.”
Indiana Wesleyan remains home at Luckey Arena on Saturday as they host Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) at 3 p.m.
