Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team rediscovered their high-octane offense on Tuesday night in an 88-81 victory over Goshen (Ind.) in Luckey Arena.
Indiana Wesleyan (20-1, 8-1 CL) had their two lowest scoring outputs of the season last week on the road but found the bottom of the basket often back at home. IWU shot 55.9-percent (33 of 59) from the field and 48.0-perecent (12 of 25) from 3-point range.
Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) had a game-high 23 points to finish one shy of his career-high. He was 10-of-13 from the field and pulled down a game-best 8 rebounds.
“I thought Lane did a lot of good things for us,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel. “I think that’s why he is such a good player, he scored 23 points and we’re all saying that’s just an average game for him.”
Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) contributed 18 points and was a key figure late in the game when Goshen had closed the gap to a single possession. All 18 points from Vandewater came from beyond the arc where he shot 6-of-8.
“Every time they made a run Zac answered. His 3’s were timely,” said Tonagel. “To see him come back shooting the ball after struggling a bit lately made me very proud of him. He’s put the time in the gym.”
The Indiana Wesleyan back court of Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) and DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio) also had big contributions tonight. The duo combined for 19 assists to just 1 turnover.
“Look at the stat line between Jonny and DJ. They go 19 assists to 1 turnover,” continued Tonagel. “That’s incredible for your backcourt to do that. It does not get any better than that. They take care of the ball and get it to the right places.”
Marlin tallied his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 assists. He did not commit a turnover in nearly 39 minutes of action. Bettinger added eight points and a career-high seven assists.
Indiana Wesleyan trailed a grand total of 12 seconds in the game tonight but was never able to put away Goshen. IWU led by as many as 11 with 15 minutes remaining but Goshen went on a 19-9 spurt to close within 1 point at 61-60 with 8:46 to go.
Goshen (12-9, 5-4 CL) was three points behind at 69-66 with 4:20 left. Bettinger drilled a 3-pointer on the next IWU possession to ignite a 12-4 run to build an 81-70 lead with 1:34 left. Goshen scored 11 points in the final 39 seconds of the game but Indiana Wesleyan connected on 7-of-9 free throws in that time to preserve the victory.
Indiana Wesleyan will remain at home for their next game which is against No. 8-ranked Bethel (Ind.) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Luckey Arena.
